Ambuja Cements innovates in sustainability by producing building materials of the future

  • Alccofine Micro Materials, patented technology of microfine mineral additives to manufacture sustainable building materials.

Ambuja Cements Ltd., one of India’s leading sustainable cement manufacturers, has complemented India’s infrastructure development with its wide range of high quality and futuristic building materials and solutions. In line with the company’s strategy of continuous innovation, the Alccofine Micro Materials product line complements its strength in the cement core business and helps it meet specialist applications.

A joint venture between Ambuja Cements and the Alcon Group, Alccofine Micro Materials manufactures products like AF 1203 (series below 1200), a proprietary ultra-fine mineral additive used with high performance concrete that provides long life. This product improves the hydraulic property and the pozzolanic reactivity of the concrete, which improves the hydration, improves the compaction density of the pasty component, reduces the water demand, the dosage of the admixture and thus improves the strength and the durability of the concrete.

The 1100 Series product line includes Microfine Injection Grout products. This product enables effective penetration of microfine and ultrafine particles deep into strata – or rock layers – to aid in the reduction of permeation properties, the injection of curtains for dams and water bodies, and the improvement of capacity carrying these layers. This finds application in the construction of large structures such as retaining walls for reservoirs and dams or canals, among others.

Alccofine’s products find application in small to large scale structures, whether skyscrapers, subway lines, roads, flyovers, housing complexes, tunnels, large refineries, defense projects or even single-family homes. In short, structures that stand – and have stood – the test of time. The products are added to cement/concrete at the time of construction, which improves their durability, improves the resistance of concrete to aggressive environmental agents, among other benefits.

Alccofine’s products already have a long track record of use in vital infrastructure projects across India, be it the Kishanganga Hydroelectric Power Project in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and ongoing metro projects in Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Chennai, New Delhi and Calcutta. Other projects include iconic bridges over the Mandvi and Zuari rivers in Goa; bridges over the Ganges and Brahmaputra at Patna and Guwahati; the Mumbai Trans-Port Bridge, which is India’s longest; large NHAI projects and hydroelectric dam projects in Himachal Pradesh (HP), J&K and Assam; the main shipyards and defense ports; skyscrapers in Mumbai and New Delhi and underground tunnels in Mumbai, Kolkata, J&K, HP and Arunachal Pradesh.

Alccofine is thus making a vital contribution to India’s infrastructure, a sector which also received considerable attention in this year’s annual budget of the Union Government presented by Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman.

The company has a manufacturing plant in Goa, which is one of the largest in the world for microfine materials. The facility also includes a state-of-the-art lab that tests building materials, including long-term durability testing by various parameters.
