Bryan Flores has always been fascinated by construction. His curiosity about how and why things are built led him to discover construction management at Colorado State University and eventually to do an internship with the construction company Swinerton.
A graduate in senior construction management, Flores chose CSU because the construction management program is well respected in the industry.
“I knew the investment opportunities offered by the program couldn’t be found anywhere else,” said Flores. “Choosing CSU was one of the best decisions I’ve made. “
Choose site management
Flores initially wanted to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder for a business degree. But over time, he realized that his passion was construction management. After working for an insulation contractor, Flores got acquainted with the professional field.
He was introduced to Swinerton while working with his father on a construction project the summer before attending CSU. After school started, Flores met COO John Spight at a construction management social event and told him about his experience working for Swinerton. Spight told Flores to stop by the Swinerton table at the job fair, where Flores was invited to an employee dinner. He was interviewed shortly after.
A day at work
Flores works as an intern project engineer for the Block 162 project in downtown Denver.
“Every day is a different day on the job site,” said Flores. “Not a day is the same, and that’s something that really excites me about my internship. I really enjoy working with a group of talented people here in Swinerton.
Flores’ day begins with printing a timesheet with the project cost codes – cost groups for organizing amounts, quantities or budgets – and walks with the foreman on the job site. , checking if all the sites are on time and collecting their production rates from the day before. If production isn’t achieved, Flores asks why and helps them come up with ideas on how to improve. Once this data collection is complete, it assigns a percentage of completion to the phase code. Flores is also responsible for ordering materials and equipment for people in the field, inventorying materials and ensuring time is properly billed during the construction phases.
“Being able to leave a mark on my community has been extremely rewarding,” said Flores. “There is something about running a completed project that I know I was able to contribute to and that gives me a tremendous sense of pride. “
Flores says her internship experience was also influenced by COVID-19. Some plans have been canceled due to the virus outbreak. Swinerton usually holds several events for their interns to meet, network and get to know each other. Due to health protocols put in place to reduce capacity and limit exposure between people, trainee events have been canceled, including the trainee paintball match.
Flores will graduate from CSU in spring 2021 and he intends to continue working for a general contractor. His plan is to continue working for Swinerton after graduation.
