Mitchell City Council to Consider Agreement for Construction Management of Firesteel Creek Area Wetland – Mitchell Republic

The construction phase of the city’s wetland project near Lake Mitchell is looming on the horizon.

On Monday, April 18, Mitchell City Council will consider approving a $50,000 agreement for construction oversight and tendering services with Ducks Unlimited.

According to Public Works Director Joe Schroeder’s memo to council, the agreement with Ducks Unlimited will provide final tender documents, construction staking and construction management services for “s ‘ensure that the project is built according to plans and specifications’.

Wetlands and silt ponds will cover about 37 acres of land along Firesteel Creek, Schroeder noted. The wetlands are proposed to be built on part of the city’s 371 acres of land it purchased from the Kelley family in 2019 in a $4.1 million land deal that came with a home of several million dollars.

With the large amount of phosphorus and sediment flowing into Mitchell Lake via Firesteel Creek, Mayor Bob Everson said the wetlands will aim to significantly reduce phosphorus and sediment loads that are known to cause the blooms of algae in the lake.

During the city’s most recent discussion of the wetland project, Schroeder said cattails will be planted throughout the wetland. The cattails would act as natural filters collecting phosphorus and sediment flowing along the creek.

According to Schroeder, some of the construction of the wetland will require the excavation of large areas of land near the creek. The council has yet to open bids for the construction phase, but agreement on Monday’s case will bring the city closer to the start of accepting bids.

Previous project timelines indicated that construction could begin as early as this spring.

The wetland project, including construction works and design, is funded entirely by grants from non-point sources through the State Revolving Fund (SRF) which is available to communities undertaking wetland projects. improvement of wastewater, storm water and drinking water projects. For the wetlands project, the city secured approximately $1.1 million in grants from non-point sources.

The following will be considered part of the consent agenda:
