Boise State University’s campus is expanding again with the new $4 million ESI Building for Construction Management, named after the Meridian-based construction company co-owned by the alumnus of Boise State and construction management, Neil Nelson (’94).
Through a principal gift of $2 million, the ESI Building for Construction Management denomination will honor ESI’s vision and commitment to the Department of Construction Management and ensure that the next generation of construction management graduates has the facilities to provide continuous opportunities for innovation and discovery.
“ESI has worked with Boise State University’s Department of Construction Management for more than 15 years to support internships and program development,” said ESI Construction President Neil Nelson. “We are excited to help bring this much-needed facility to life so the University can continue to provide highly skilled and educated students for Idaho’s rapidly growing construction industry.”
The state-of-the-art building will mark many “firsts” not only for the State of Boise, but also for the State of Idaho. The new construction management center will be the first building in the state of Idaho designed by an all-female team of architects and engineers led by Lombard/Conrad Architects. The design features an attractive exterior and interior showcasing the use of various building materials and construction methods. Most notably, the mass timber structure will make it a “first of its kind” building in the Boise metro area. The institution will be the first academic institution to face Beacon Street, a street with increasing traffic and exposure.
“Construction Management is an exciting program that offers students a chance to shape the future, literally. The growth of our students in the program has exploded and will help meet the demand in our state,” said Boise State President Dr. Marlene Tromp. “With the invaluable support of ESI Construction and this state-of-the-art facility, we will expand opportunities for our students and for our state, preparing more people to enter a field that advances the well-being of the Idaho.”
The 12,000 square foot multi-level building provides students with expansive lab structures, state-of-the-art learning environments, a 45-seat building technology and computer classroom, and new high-rise structures. height for enhanced outdoor lab activities.
Over the past four years, the program has seen a 50% increase in student growth. The new facility will provide a showcase for the construction industry and the state of Boise.

The construction management program at Boise State is the only program in the state offering a bachelor’s degree, as well as a minor and a certificate for industry professionals.
“The construction industry representatives on the CM Industry Advisory Council are committed to building a facility that will serve as the center of the CM community and provide our students with a living and learning structure that will enhance education of CM students,” associate professor of construction management says Casey Cline. “Thanks to their support and donations from many local, regional and national businesses, the building will be fully funded by donors.
