Wages of construction workers and prices of building materials in the 2nd quarter of 2022

MACAO, Aug 9 – Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicates that the average daily wage of construction workers increased by 1.0% quarter-on-quarter to MOP 795 in the second quarter 2022. The average daily wage of local workers (MOP976) and non-resident workers (MOP719) increased by 0.8% and 0.5% respectively.

In terms of main occupations, the average daily wages of air conditioning mechanics (MOP973), welders (MOP850) and electricians and electrical workers (MOP863) increased by 8.0%, 3.3% and 2.3% respectively. % quarter-on-quarter, while wages for bricklayers and plasterers (MOP755), concrete carpenters (MOP746) and ironworkers (MOP766) fell 2.8%, 2.1% and 1.6%.

After discounting the effect of inflation, the real wage index for construction workers (96.2) in the second quarter of 2022 increased by 0.4% quarter on quarter, that of local construction workers (96.5) decreasing by 1.2%.

In building materials, the average price of spiral and round rebar (6,723 MOP per ton) in the second quarter of 2022 increased by 1.2% quarter-on-quarter, while that of concrete (1,090 MOP per cubic meter) decreased by 0.4%. The building materials price index for residential buildings rose 1.5% quarter-on-quarter to 126.8; the price indexes of emulsion paints, equipment and pipes increased by 8.9%, 4.1% and 2.2% respectively, while the price index for ceramic sanitary ware fell by 1, 4%.
